350 Years of Gratitude

On Saturday, 13 June 2026, we gathered in Bratislava to celebrate a remarkable jubilee – the 350th anniversary of the arrival of the first Ursuline Sisters in Slovakia. It was a day rich in memories of our history, and above all, a day filled with gratitude, joy, a strong family spirit, and renewed enthusiasm.

The celebration began, as every important moment does, with prayer. The solemn Holy Mass in the Jesuit Church was presided over by the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Nicola Girasoli. In his homily, delivered with his characteristic enthusiasm, he reminded us to always remember who we are and that each of us is a gift from God to the world and to our country.

He highlighted three pillars of Ursuline life, following the example of Saint Angela Merici, our foundress:

  • Awareness of our identity: God does not choose us because of our achievements, but because of who we are.
  • Faithfulness to the charism in humility: Despite difficulties or a lack of vocations, we are called to remain firmly rooted in the legacy of Saint Angela.
  • Unity: The strength of a community lies in unity of mind and heart – something Saint Angela valued deeply. It is this unity that keeps our charism alive.

In conclusion, he encouraged us to be joyful and enthusiastic witnesses, especially for young women, so that Saint Angela’s charism may continue to flourish. Our mission through education is far from finished, and the world needs to see a joyful witness of faith.

After the Holy Mass, we continued with a prayerful service of thanksgiving, which connected our 350-year journey with the teachings of Saint Angela. For all of us, it was a beautiful moment to “recharge our spiritual batteries”, as the Nuncio also encouraged us to do.

The celebration then continued in Moyzes Hall with a shared lunch, warm conversations, and a festive programme. We watched videos about our history, beautifully complemented by artistic performances from both former and current Ursuline students. Seeing them was living proof that the seeds of education and formation continue to bear fruit today.

The whole day was marked by a joyful and welcoming atmosphere. We are grateful for every person, friend, and collaborator who has walked alongside us over these years and helped us fulfil the mission entrusted to us by God.

The Nuncio’s encouraging words remain in our hearts:

“Do not be afraid of the challenges of our time. These 350 years of history have taught you how to overcome obstacles with God’s help. Look forward with hope to the next 350 years. Never be afraid to be who you are, to proclaim the Good News, and to be proud of your charism. Be filled with strength today and rejoice!”
