100 years of the Ursulines in Rybnik, Poland

“You only get to be 100 once!” - This is how one local newspaper headlined an article about the jubilee of the Ursuline Rybnik community.

On 3 June 2023, the Ursulines of Rybnik officially began celebrating a century of presence and service in Rybnik.  The Jubilee Mass took place at 11 am in St Anthony's Basilica.  It brought together current and former students and their parents, school staff, friends, city authorities and sisters who had come from communities in Krakow, Wroclaw, Poznan and Lublin.  The Eucharist was presided over by Bishop Grzegorz Olszowski.

Afterwards, the whole group marched together through the streets of the town to the schoolyard. There were two stops: to release 100 symbolic biodegradable balloons for the centenary and to lay flowers at the monument to Wladyslaw Weber - the at that time mayor, at whose invitation the Ursuline sisters came to Rybnik in 1923, opening a convent and school.

A picnic was held in the school courtyard, which provided an opportunity to have fun and enjoy a friendly get-together with friends. Joy also accompanied the worship concert led by the band '40 sons and 30 grandsons riding 70 donkeys'. It was a truly beautiful celebration!
