Feast of St Ursula Celebration - England

On the 21st October we gathered as a Province to celebrate the feast of St Ursula, our patron.

This day also marked the start of an exciting new chapter for the Roman Union Ursuline sisters in England. We became part of the Insieme Region with the Ursuline sisters in the Czech Republic. With the sad reality of dwindling numbers and an ageing community, the English Province, after 101 years, has  come to an end. As St Angela told us “If, according to times and circumstances, the need arises to make new rules or do something differently, do it prudently and with good advice”. It is with the spirit and charism of St Angela that we embrace our future and look forward to being part of this new region.

The day began with Mass in the community room at Forest Gate. Fr Yusef, a Franciscan priest from St Francis of Assisi parish in Stratford, celebrated the liturgy for us and we were joined by two talented musicians, Lydia Elderfield and Pietro Lacopini who greatly enriched our singing. The readings and hymns reflected our trust in God for what the future brings and also our gratitude for all that has been. Mass was live streamed so that our sisters who were unable to be present could still participate.

After Mass, we were treated to a roast dinner, prepared by our amazing staff who also walk this journey with us.

Despite our change of status, we continue to live in harmony, always united together.
